In accordance with Ordinance No. 3 of 16 August 2010 in Bulgaria, road signs with a yellow fluorescent reflective background and an additional outline are used in cases where extra caution is required. The main purpose of these signs is to improve visibility in specific conditions – such as low light, adverse weather conditions or critical road sections.
Such signs with an additional outline are often placed around schools, hospitals and areas with heavy pedestrian traffic. The bright yellow reflective background enhances visibility both day and night, attracting drivers’ attention. This fluorescent colour makes the signs more noticeable in peripheral vision, significantly aiding safety.
The main types of road signs that can have this outline include:
- Speed limit signs, which warn drivers to reduce speed in certain sections.
- Warning signs for road hazards – sharp bends, pedestrian crossings, or other potential risks.
- Signs for pedestrian zones and high-risk areas with a large flow of children or pedestrians.
The requirements for placing and producing these signs are part of the measures to improve traffic safety and help drivers react in time to hazardous sections.
